Budget travel boom
The rise of low-cost carriers (LCCs) in the Middle East is reshaping regional travel trends. A recent report by global aviation consultancy OAG revealed that LCCs now account for 29 per cent of airline capacity in the region, up from just 13 per cent in 2014. This surge is largely fuelled by demand from budget-conscious travellers in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), especially among expatriates from Asia and Africa.
The GCC population, which reached 63.7 million in 2024, includes a large number of foreign nationals who frequently travel to and from their home countries. For many of these travellers, affordability is a key consideration, making budget airlines such as Air Arabia an essential option.
Air Arabia is among the eight major low-cost players in the Middle East, alongside flydubai, flynas, flyadeal, Jazeera Airways, Salam Air, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, and Air Arabia Abu Dhabi. Flydubai and flynas together hold almost half of the LCC market share, while Air Arabia continues to expand its presence across both the Middle East and Asia.
According to OAG, the Middle East ranks as the sixth largest region globally in terms of airline seat capacity, with 270 million one-way seats in 2024. This places it ahead of Eastern Europe and just behind South Asia. Despite this growth, only two Middle Eastern carriers – Emirates and Qatar Airways – featured in the 2024 Top 20 Global Airlines by Capacity.
As the Eid Al Adha and summer holiday season approaches, travel from the UAE is expected to surge. Air Arabia’s offers are strategically timed to cater to the seasonal rush, especially for families, tourists, and workers planning visits home or quick getaways.
For UAE residents eyeing an affordable escape this season, the clock is ticking. Bookings under Air Arabia’s current offer must be made by June 2, 2025.
